3 Brilliant Safety Tips: A Refresh for Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, StreetRider Insurance, Ontario

Safety is one of the most important things to remember when riding your motorcycle. It’s never too late to review crucial safety tips; even the most seasoned riders benefit from reminders.

Top 3 Motorcycle Safety Tips

Tip 1: Be Visible

Your safety depends on several factors but being seen is a major one. All motorcycles must have a white headlight and a red rear light. You should ensure your lights are on and in good working order before every ride. You may also want to consider adding reflective tape to your gear such as your helmet. Make sure to wear brightly coloured clothing so that you are visible to other drivers.

Tip 2: Stay Alert

Driving a motorcycle takes a considerable amount of concentration and physical strength; being both mentally and physically prepared is key. Since 2000, deaths from collisions caused by distracted driving have doubled which is why it's important to remain alert while operating your motorcycle. Remember, even if you are stuck in traffic or stopped at a red light it is illegal to:
  1. Use a phone to text or dial
  2. Use a hand-held electronic entertainment device
  3. Program a GPS
  4. View any screen unrelated to driving

Tip 3: Share the Road

Passing vehicles on a motorcycle can be dangerous, especially larger vehicles that have several blind spots. Avoid following too closely and stay far enough behind when stopped behind large vehicles, especially transport trucks. When it comes to riding your motorcycle in a group, remember that lane sharing, splitting, and filtering are prohibited.

Your safety is important all year and not just during Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. Use these tips whenever you ride to ensure you stay safe.
