As motorcycle riders, we are in direct sun every time we ride. Since May is Melanoma Awareness Month, we’re providing safety tips on how you can protect yourself from the sun while riding your bike.
While we might have gear that helps to protect us from the sun such as a full face motorcycle helmet, overexposure to the sun’s ultraviolet light can cause premature aging and lead to skin cancer. Read these tips below to learn how you can protect your skin from the sun.
Sun Safety Tips for Motorcycle Riders
#1 Wear Sunscreen
To protect your skin, you should always wear sunscreen and reapply if you’re out for a long motorcycle ride.
#2 Cover Up
Even in the summer when the temperature is hot, you should still wear full-coverage gear on every motorcycle ride. You should also wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from the sun.
#3 Stay Hydrated
Drinking lots of water and fluids throughout the day will help to keep you from dehydrating. The easiest way to drink water while on a ride is to wear a hydration pack.#4 Plan Your Ride
Since the sun is the hottest between 12pm and 5pm, try to plan your motorcycle ride before or after this time. If you must be out in the afternoon, ensure you have water with you and take breaks if you’re starting to feel hot. The break will ensure you can drink some water, have a snack, and stretch your legs.
While riding our motorcycles in the sun makes for an enjoyable experience, we should always be prepared by following these sun safety tips.
