5 Things Nobody Told You About Holiday Kitchen Safety, Youngs Insurance, Ontario

It’s okay if your aunt Susie burns the turkey, but it’s not okay if she burns the house down.

Make sure you share our helpful holiday cooking safety tips with everyone in your family to ensure nothing unsafe, life-threatening or dangerous happens in the kitchen this holiday season.

5 Holiday Cooking Safety Tips

Tip 1 | Test your smoke detectors before you start cooking. Make sure they are in working order and if they are battery-powered, make sure the batteries are charged.

Tip 2 | It's easy to forget steam is a hazard in the kitchen (it can cause major burns). Be careful when taking lids off of pots or opening steaming bags from the microwave.

Tip 3 | Sometimes, regardless of the preventative steps we take, a fire can still start. To keep anything like this from getting out of hand, always have a working fire extinguisher you know how to use in an easily accessible spot.

Tip 4 | Although you may be tempted to wear loose clothing in preparation for the substantial amounts of food you are going to eat, this is not advisable while cooking. You should also tie back any long hair.

Tip 5 | Keep your friends close and your lids closer.  If frying something, make sure you have the appropriate lid close by to smother any grease fires.

Don’t forget you can never be too cautious in the kitchen.  We hope these tips keep you and your family safe this holiday season!
