Youngs Insurance is proud to support causes that are important to our employees, which is why this year we introduced a donation matching program for our staff. Our first staff matching donation was made in memory of a little girl who passed away from Pulmonary Hypertension.
What is Pulmonary Hypertension? 
Pulmonary Hypertension is a rare lung disease that impacts the arteries and restricting blood flow, ultimately resulting in the complete closing of the arteries. In pulmonary hypertension, the blood vessels of the lungs have an increased amount of muscle in the walls which causes a higher resistance in the lungs. The right ventricle then has to work harder to pump blood out to the lungs. The right ventricle will enlarge and thicken in response to this extra work. With time, the extra work placed on the right side of the heart can cause it to fail.
In Memory of Ariana
Our donation to the Pulmonary Hypertension Association of Canada was made in memory of Ariana. Ariana was born with Pulmonary Hypertension; although they didn't realize it until she was 2 years old, as the symptoms are similar to those of other illnesses. From the time of diagnosis without treatment, a child has approximately 2-3 years to live. Ariana was diagnosed at two years old and succumbed to Pulmonary Hypertension within hours of her diagnosis.
Ariana's family believes that everyone has a purpose in life and that Ariana’s purpose was to shed light on this disease. We can only hope that more research can be conducted through funding and that a cure can be uncovered.
