Support #BreastCancerAwareness Month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and each year the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation (CBCF) ramps up their awareness promotion while educating us on recent developments and successes. This year we celebrate the progress that has been made in the fight against breast cancer; ultimately working towards a future without it.

New Tools & Resources available to you

Did you know that 1 out of 8 women will get breast cancer? This is a staggering statistic; while most people are aware of how prevalent breast cancer is, it is unlikely they realize the impact it could potentially have on their self or the women in their lives. To provide more awareness, the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation (CBCF) has introduced four new initiatives;

Mammograms: My Breasts, My Test

According to CBCF, the goal is to find cancer early, as that allows for more treatment options – the best way to do this is regular mammograms. They explained, “For women at average risk of breast cancer, we know mammogram screening is most effective every two years, between the ages of 50 and 74,(1)(2) yet many Canadian women do not participate in regular breast screening.” (Source: CBCF)

CBCF in partnership with Shoppers Drug Mart developed an online tool that helps you assess your need for regular mammogram screening called, My Breasts, My Test. This test will take less than 10 minutes to complete and provides you with all the information you require to make an informed choice on mammogram screening.

BRA Day is made up of a variety of events across Canada solely created for women looking to learn more about post-mastectomy breast reconstruction.

Metastatic Breast Cancer Day

October 13, 2016, is Metastatic Breast Cancer Day – a day we dedicate to those who have been impacted by metastatic breast cancer. Did you know, “Breast cancer will metastasize (spread) to other parts of the body in approximately 30% of women who are initially diagnosed with early stage breast cancer. Approximately 5% to 10% of breast cancers are metastatic at initial diagnosis. It is not clearly understood why or how breast cancer spreads to other parts of the body so we don’t yet know how to prevent this from happening.” (Source: CBCF)
